A Day in The Life of an Occupational Therapist

A Day in the Life of an Occupational Therapist

Welcome to my blog! As an occupational therapist (OT), I frequently receive questions about what my day-to-day life is like. For many, the role of an OT is shrouded in mystery. What exactly does an OT do? How do we make a difference in people’s lives? Today, I’ll take you through a typical day in my life, sharing the highs, challenges, and rewarding moments that define my profession.

Morning Routine: Setting the Tone

I start my day around 7:00 AM, indulging in a little ritual to set a positive tone for the day ahead. After a quick breakfast and a refreshing cup of coffee, I take a moment to review my schedule. Each day brings its unique blend of clients, challenges, and accomplishments. I map out my interventions for the day, reminding myself of the goals we’re working toward.

By 8:30 AM, I’m at my workplace—a vibrant outpatient therapy clinic. I love the atmosphere here, filled with the hustle and bustle of other healthcare professionals committed to helping patients. I make my way to my first appointment, ready to engage with my first patient.

Morning Sessions: Engaging with Clients

My first client, a lively 8-year-old named Timmy, is working on improving his fine motor skills after a mild developmental delay. We play with colorful building blocks, turning therapy into a fun game. My goal is to help Timmy learn how to grasp and manipulate objects more effectively. Through laughter and play, I can see him making progress—his confidence is growing.

Next up is Mrs. Johnson, a 75-year-old woman recovering from hip surgery. We focus on activities of daily living (ADLs), especially dressing and grooming. I walk her through adaptive strategies for getting dressed independently, making sure we celebrate small victories along the way. The moment she successfully puts on her shirt by herself is magical. Her smile says it all—this is what I love about being an OT: empowering people to do what they love.

Lunch: Fueling Up and Collaborating

By noon, I take a break for lunch. This is my chance to recharge and catch up with my colleagues. We often discuss strategies for challenging cases or share success stories that inspire us all. Collaboration is vital in our field, and these moments foster a supportive environment where we can learn from one another.

After lunch, I take a moment to review my documentation. Keeping detailed records of clients’ progress ensures we remain on track with our goals and communicate effectively with other healthcare providers.

Afternoon Sessions: Diverse Challenges

In the afternoon, I work with an adult client, Michael, who has suffered a stroke. Our session focuses on regaining the ability to cook independently. I set up a simulation in the clinic, breaking down the cooking process into manageable steps. Michael is initially apprehensive, but as he becomes more comfortable, I can see his determination. When he successfully prepares a simple dish, we celebrate with high fives! It’s moments like these that truly affirm the power of occupational therapy.

Next, I meet with a teenager, Sarah, who’s struggling with focus and organization due to ADHD. We work on creating a structured schedule and organizational systems to help her manage her schoolwork effectively. I provide tools like planners and digital reminders, ensuring she leaves our session feeling equipped and confident.

Wrap-Up: Reflecting on the Day

By 5:00 PM, my sessions come to an end, but my day isn’t quite finished yet. I sit down to document the day’s progress for each of my clients, jotting down important notes and planning future interventions. This part of my work is crucial—it ensures continuity of care and helps track every small improvement.

As I drive home, I reflect on the day’s successes and challenges. Each client has taught me something invaluable, whether it’s the power of patience, the joy of small victories, or the importance of flexibility in treatment. I feel grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in their lives.

Conclusion: A Rewarding Journey

As an occupational therapist, every day is a blend of challenges, triumphs, laughter, and heartfelt connections. I strive to equip my clients with the skills and confidence they need to enjoy life to the fullest, whatever their individual circumstances may be.

Being an OT isn’t just a job; it's a calling that continually inspires me. Thank you for joining me on this journey! If you ever have questions about occupational therapy, feel free to reach out. Until next time, keep striving for your best self, one small step at a time!
